Water damage can easily be considered one of the worst disasters that may occur at your property. It’s crucial that immediate action takes place when damage is discovered. First… are you covered? Before the damage even occurs, be protected with home owners insurance. Insurance will help soften financial blows. If its determined that you waited too long to report damages and extended damages occur, you may be left to pay for the repairs yourself. Make sure you seek assistance at the first sign of trouble.

Whether your insurance provider covers your claim or not, you should take immediate action to protect your property.

Step 1 – Locate The Source And Shut Off The Water Supply

The next move to make when you discover water damage, is to find out where the water is coming from and shut it off. Better yet, turn off the water supply to your home. Leaking pipes or a pipe that burst are the most common cause of water damage. If you have a large water loss on your hands, you should also shut off electricity and gas if possible.

Step 2 – Start A Claim With Your Insurance Provider.

You should notify your insurance company immediately of the water damages. Even if the damage is not covered, they will be able to assist you in contacting professionals to begin restoration.

Step 3 – Rescue Your Most Valuable Belongings

Gather your important things from the affected areas and put them in a safe place. Family heirlooms, jewelry, money, photos etc.. You should also allow electronics and outlets sufficient time to dry before plugging them in.
